Abstract

OBJECTIVE:  To establish the relationship between the mother's weight gain during pregnancy, the mother's age, the mother's BMI at the beginning of pregnancy and the weight of the term newborn in a first-level care facility in the year 2017.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Applied research, descriptive level and descriptive-correlational design. The population studied was made up of pregnant women and newborns cared for in a first-level health facility from July to December 2017.

RESULTS: The age of the pregnant women was 25 ± 6 years and the weight gain during pregnancy was 9.23 ± 2.1 kg. The age of the newborns was 39.29 ± 1.1 weeks and their weight was 3154.64 ± 361 g. There is a low correlation between weight gain (r = 0.242), the mother's age (r = 0.002) and BMI (r = 0.094) at the beginning of gestation with the weight of the newborn.

CONCLUSIONS: There is a significant relationship between the weight gain of the mother and the weight of the newborn (p = 0.001), and the mother's age and BMI at the beginning of gestation have no significant relationship.
