OBJECTIVE: To determine the clinical-epidemiological characteristics of term newborns with low weight seen in the neonatology service of Hospital II Huamanga Carlos Tuppia García Godos de Ayacucho in 2018.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was descriptive, observational, retrospective, cross-sectional, with a quantitative approach. A data collection form was used, which was completed with the information obtained from the medical records; the tabulation and analysis was carried out with the SPSS Statistics V25.0 program.
RESULTS: 50% of the mothers were older than 35 years; 58.2% were cohabitants; 58.2% had a non-university higher level of education; 76.2% were multiparous; 43.4% had a history of children with low birth weight; 51.6% had a previous abortion and 52.5% had less than 6 prenatal check-ups. The female gender was the one that obtained the highest percentage with 59.8%; 67.2% with height less than 46 cm; 69.7% with head circumference less than 33 cm; 87.7% presented a thoracic perimeter between 28 to 34 cm and 83.6% had an APGAR at minute of 7 to 10.
CONCLUSIONS: The female gender predominates in term newborns with low weight, the mothers are elderly, cohabiting, with a higher non-university level of education, they are multiparous and have a history of abortion. Height and head circumference are below normal limits, and thoracic circumference and APGAR at one minute were adequate.
